"Virtual community" is endlessly fascinating. I love the discussion of pros and cons in the article.

The whole "metaverse" coming into focus freaks me out a little. I first read about its potential in Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, still a great read, which foretold not just Second Life but also the collapse of religion into drug-like ecstasy shown in the rise (should I say revival??) of evangelical speaking in tongues in the past few years.

Now, I'm hearing about Second Life through Community Planners (Planning Magazine had an article) and Urban Designers (who are bemoaning the lack of public gathering places that can foster/support quality interaction and community building).

It's a paradigm shift that could have huge implications across the board. Thanks for your investigations of the spiritual side. Fascinating.
